Behind the Scenes: New Secrets from the Tombs

5,000-year-old mummies brought back to life. Well, sort of.

Creative Director Tom Jacobsen transformed six images into fully-animated Science Museum campaign.

January 2016 — VOLT Studios partnered with Minneapolis agency, Gabriel deGrood Bendt, to create an animated campaign for the Science Museum of Minnesota‘s 2016 exhibit, Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs.

The exhibitition featured a unique selection of mummies—some not on public view for over a century—from deep within the vaults of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History.

Creative Director, Tom Jacobsen, was handed only six photographs at the project’s onset. From those images alone, Jacobsen’s team found creative ways to breathe digital life into the ancient Peruvian and Egyptian tombs. The four animated spots that resulted from this quick-turn project juxtaposed the ancient with the future via broadcast and online media, resulting in hundreds of new visitors to the museum. This before-and-after video unravels the many layers of this mysterious and technical project.

Special thanks to the crews at GDB and the Science Museum for allowing us to create this inspired work with you.
